    Isolation and Crystal Structure of 3-Aryl-1-(2-hydroxyphenyl)-3-hydroxy- 1- propanones Derived from Claisen-Schmidt Condensation of 2- Hydroxyacetophenone with Benzaldehyde Derivatives

    2-Hydroxyacetophenone reacted with benzaldehyde derivatives under alkalinic conditions followed by addition of dilute hydrochloric acid solution to afford mixtures of the known 2-hydroxychalcone derivatives and the corresponding previously undescribed 3-aryl-1-(2-hydroxyphenyl)-3-hydroxy-1-propanones. The isolation of the b-hydroxyketone derivatives depends on the work-up conditions. Their structures were established using a combination of NMR, IR and mass spectroscopic techniques.     Comparação das propriedades de textura de peras submetidas a descasque manual e químico

    O objetivo deste trabalho consistiu no estudo de uma forma alternativa de descasque da pêra, o descasque químico, a uma temperatura de 65 ºC, através de dois solventes a diferentes concentrações (hidróxido de sódio (10 % e 18 %) e hidróxido de potássio (8 % e 14%)). Posteriormente estudou-se o seu impacto nas propriedades de textura da pêra, neste caso a variedade Rocha, quando comparado com os frutos descascados manualmente. No caso do descasque químico com hidróxido de potássio este solvente conduziu a uma ligeira diminuição da dureza da pêra mas manteve praticamente inalterado a sua elasticidade e coesividade. O aumento da concentração do solvente de 8 % para 14 % não conduziu a alterações significativas das propriedades de textura da pêra descascada quimicamente. No que se refere ao hidróxido de sódio e para uma concentração de 10 % verificou-se um aumento da dureza, da elasticidade e da coesividade da pêra descascada com o solvente quando comparada com o descasque manual. No entanto, para a concentração de 18 % de hidróxido de sódio as propriedades de textura foram semelhantes às observadas com o descasque manual

    Surgery of chest wall deformities

    OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the medium-term results of 77 surgical corrections in patients with chest wall deformities, 53 (68.8%) with pectus excavatum and 24 with pectus carinatum, operated upon from 1985 to 1994. METHODS: The mean age of the patients was 14.7 years (4-39 years) and 77% were younger than 15 years of age. There were 59 male (76.7%) and 18 female patients. Only four had a family history of the malformation. Seven patients (9.1%) presented with asthma-like symptoms, and 13 (16.9%) referred dyspnea and tiredness for small efforts. The remainder (74.2%) were asymptomatic, but most were psychologically disturbed by the deformity and postural abnormality. Two patients had other skeletal abnormalities. The modified surgical technique used in all cases consisted of subperichondrial resection of the abnormal costal cartilages, transverse and longitudinal osteotomies of the sternum and internal stabilization with a steel rod which was generally removed between 6 and 12 months postoperatively. RESULTS: There was neither early nor late mortality. One patient had a pneumothorax which required chest tube drainage. The mean admission time was 10.5 days (8-14 days). Follow-up was complete, and 90% of the patients had increased effort tolerance. Five of the seven patients (72%) with 'asthmatic' symptoms showed a decrease in the frequency of the crises. Two patients had recurrence of the depression by 3 and 8 months, respectively. The remaining 75 patients (97.3%) were satisfied with the cosmetic result of the surgery. CONCLUSIONS: Surgical treatment of chest wall deformities using this technique leads to good cosmetic, orthopedic and psychological results. We believe that the operations should be performed at any age in patients who have at least a moderate deformity

    Analysis and Inter-Calibration of Wet Path Delay Datasets to Compute the Wet Tropospheric Correction for CryoSat-2 over Ocean

    Unlike most altimetric missions, CryoSat-2 is not equipped with an onboard microwave radiometer (MWR) to provide wet tropospheric correction (WTC) to radar altimeter measurements, thus, relying on a model-based one provided by the European Center for Medium-range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF). In the ambit of ESA funded project CP4O, an improved WTC for CryoSat-2 data over ocean is under development, based on a data combination algorithm (DComb) through objective analysis of WTC values derived from all existing global-scale data types. The scope of this study is the analysis and inter-calibration of the large dataset of total column water vapor (TCWV) products from scanning MWR aboard Remote Sensing (RS) missions for use in the WTC computation for CryoSat-2. The main issues regarding the computation of the WTC from all TCWV products are discussed. The analysis of the orbital parameters of CryoSat-2 and all other considered RS missions, their sensor characteristics and inter-calibration is presented, providing an insight into the expected impact of these datasets on the WTC estimation. The most suitable approach for calculating the WTC from TCWV is investigated. For this type of application, after calibration with respect to an appropriate reference, two approaches were found to give very similar results, with root mean square differences of 2 mm

    Spatial and temporal evolution of neuronal activation, stress and injury in lithium-pilocarpine seizures in adult rats.

    In order to follow the spatial and temporal evolution of neuronal damage, cellular activation and stress responses subsequent to lithium-pilocarpine seizures of various durations in the adult rat, we analyzed the expression of Fos protein and local cerebral glucose utilization as markers of cellular activation, HSP72 immunoreactivity and acid fuchsin staining as indicators of cellular stress and injury, and Cresyl violet staining for the assessment of neuronal damage. The expression of Fos appeared very early, 2-30 min after the onset of polyspikes and intensified during the following 4 h. Fos immunoreactivity was especially high in the hippocampus, cerebral cortex, amygdala and anterior olfactory nuclei. Local cerebral glucose utilization measured during the second hour of seizures was largely increased (350-580%) over control levels in cortical areas, amygdala, dentate gyrus, caudate nucleus and mediodorsal thalamus. HSP72 immunoreactivity never appeared earlier than 40-50 min after the onset of polyspikes, and was most prominent in hippocampal CA3 area, cerebral cortex (except the piriform cortex) and anterior olfactory nuclei. Acid fuchsin staining was maximal in the piriform cortex and the polymorphic layer of the dentate gyrus. Staining was moderate in the sensorimotor cortex and the amygdala. Neuronal damage was extensive in the piriform and entorhinal cortices, the hippocampal CA3 area and the polymorphic layer of the dentate gyrus, basal amygdala, mediodorsal thalamus and anterior olfactory nuclei. In conclusion, the present study shows that brain regions with the highest expression of Fos and the largest metabolic activation were also highly stained with acid fuchsin and most heavily damaged. Conversely, there is no clear relationship between HSP72 expression, cellular activation and neuronal damage

    Ten-year follow-up of a giant prolactinoma

    Giant prolactinomas are rare pituitary tumours of which management can be a challenge. A 28-year-old man presented with headaches, visual impairment and behavioural changes. Clinically, the patient was found to have hypogonadism and bitemporal hemianopsia. A MRI demonstrated a pituitary tumour 76 mm in diameter and blood tests revealed a serum prolactin of 158 700 µU/mL (reference range 58-254). Initially, a craniotomy was performed. Immunohistochemistry of the tumour identified a prolactinoma with a high proliferative index and the patient was started on treatment with a dopamine agonist. A year later, neurological symptoms worsened due to regrowth of the lesion's cystic component, and so further surgery was performed. After 10 years of treatment with dopamine agonists, the prolactin levels decreased by 96.8%, there was an effective reduction in tumour size, and the neurological signs and symptoms resolved

    A tinea capitis, uma infecção por fungos dermatófitos do couro cabeludo, é uma patologia rara no adulto, mesmo em áreas geográficas onde a doença é prevalente. Nestes casos está muitas vezes, mas não exclusivamente, associada a imunodepressão e habitualmente surge por exposição ao agente infeccioso em contactantes próximos. São fundamentais uma história clínica e um exame objectivo minuciosos que permitam equacionar a tinha do couro cabeludo como hipótese diagnóstica e proceder à colheita de amostras para exame micológico. Esta metodologia pode evitar a realização de exames complementares exaustivos ou a prescrição de tratamentos inadequados. Os autores descrevem três casos de tinea capitis em mulheres adultas – dois casos de infecção por Microsporum audouinii e um caso por Trichophyton soudanense. É apresentado o registo iconográfico dos casos e é efectuada breve revisão da literatura

    From juvenile parkinsonism to encephalitis lethargica, a new phenotype of post-streptococcal disorders: case report.

    We report the case of a 16-year-old boy presented with a mild akinetic-rigid parkinsonism shortly after a post-streptococcal infection. After stopping corticoids, he had a rapid neurological deterioration to a fatal encephalitis lethargica-like syndrome. Serum analysis demonstrated consistently elevated anti-streptolysin-O. This case illustrates a new severe phenotype in the spectrum of the post-streptococcal disorders. This etiology should be considered in the differential diagnosis of a movement disorder with a rapid detrimental evolution
